Hey Ark buddies! If you’re playing Ark Survival Ascended on your computer and your baby dinos aren’t telling you what food they want when they are ready for imprint care, don’t worry—we’ve got your back!
Follow our simple guide to fix the imprinting bug and see what your baby tames want to be fed. We’ll also cover a few small changes and things to know about imprinting in the new Ark game.

How does imprinting work in the new Ark Survival Ascended
Imprinting in Ask Survival Ascended is mostly the same, but there are a few key differences and also one major bug to know about, especially if you are playing on PC with an external controller. When a baby dino is ready for imprinting, it will ask for one of three things: to be hand-fed a food item, to cuddle, or to go on a walk.
When a dino is ready for imprinting, the pacifier symbol will turn red.
To see what type of imprinting your dinosaur wants, walk up to it and make the HUD (the overlay window with dino information) appear.
For “Wants to cuddle with you”, simply press the action button.
For “Wants to go for a walk”, whistle the dinosaur to follow you, then walk away to make it take several steps. Walk until the imprinting is complete.
For “Wants to be handfed ________”, you will have to add the desired food item to your last hot bar slot, walk back up to your baby dino, and feed it.
There are currently no cryopods in the new ASA, so you can not cryo pod a tame to reset its imprint request or pause its maturation timer.
There is also a bug for the feeding imprint request. Follow the steps below if you are running into this bug.
Fixing the Food Imprinting Bug Issue on PC
If you see a food icon when it’s time to imprint your tame but can’t see what specific food item your dino wants to eat, it’s a bug many of us are running into.
Here’s how I was able to fix it:
Step 1: Spot the Imprinting Issue for Feeding.
- First, walk up to your baby dino when it’s time to imprint.
- If you see a food icon/food symbol in the HUD, you found the problem! This seems to be occurring for people using a gamepad or controller to play the new Ark.
Step 2: Tap a Key on Your Keyboard
- Without moving away from your dino (in other words, make sure the HUD stays visible!), tap a key on your computer keyboard. It’s like magic!
- There should be text instructions where the food icon was. It should show exactly what food your baby dino wants for imprinting.
Step 3: Make Sure It Worked
- Look at the picture to double-check if it’s showing the right food for your baby dino’s imprinting.
- If it is, you can go back to playing with your game controller, and everything should be good.
Step 4: If It Doesn’t Work…
- If the first way doesn’t fix it, you can look up what your baby dino likes to eat for imprinting on a site like DodoDex and try each option…. But try the first way first; it’s quicker!
The Imprint Bug on Xbox Console
This is STILL an issue with the console release!
The first solution to try is using a keyboard if you have one. All you need to do is press one key to see the correct HUD display for the imprinting food, and then you can go back to using your control as normal.
Other solutions:
1) If you’re playing with a tribe on a server with PC players, see if they can be in charge of identifying imprint needs.
2) Cycle through possible options that specific tame would ask for during imprinting – remember, you have to have the food item in your last hot bar spot to try to feed.
This is frustrating to hear as they’ve had time to fix it.
